Lynn-Blog2Many people approach the New Year as a time to make resolutions.  Stop smoking, start going to the gym, eat better.  But the most important resolution you can make is to find wellness.

Many injuries aren’t from accidents or a “mechanism of injury”, but are instead “insidious in onset” which means that it developed without known cause.  Rehabbing a torn ACL or a rotator cuff tear after a fall or an accident is fairly straight forward.  However, one of our focuses is to figure out the reason why the injuries that developed have happened.  By treating the cause, we can fix the symptom.  Treating the symptom will only alleviate the symptoms temporarily.

However, now that we are in 2013, I call upon all to seek wellness.  This isn’t a reminder to go to the gym every morning before work.  It is simply to introduce to you the idea of Prehab.  Prehabililation is strengthening before an injury happens.  Given that many injuries have common causes in development, it’s a smart idea to work on a plan ahead of the injury.  Your physical therapist can help you with your goals.  If you have previously had an injury that you sought treatment for, your prehab is your discharge plan of care.  Your discharge plan will help maintain wellness.

Also, many people decide to do physical therapy prior to surgery.  This has shown in many studies to drastically reduce the rehab needed after surgery and has shown better objective outcomes in wellness.  This would also be considered prehab.  The great thing about doing prehab prior to surgery is that there is always the good chance that your prehab, since it’s addressing the cause of the injury as well, will actually fix you well enough that you may end up cancelling your surgery.

Now that it’s 2013, it’s time to get well – and stay well.  At Spring Forward Physical Therapy, we are always happy to help get you there.

We are located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and offer One on One treatments with manual focused care that we support with exercise.  We also work with most insurance companies.
